Day 17: Cut. Copy. Paste.

Today’s Prompt: We all have anxieties, worries, and fears. What are you scared of? Address one of your worst fears.

Today’s Twist: Write this post in a style distinct from your own.

We all fear something in life. Sometimes more than one fear at the same time. It could have a fear of failing in class, a fear of “what-if?”, a fear of dying alone and lonely, and so on and so forth.

I’m no exception. I’ve had my fair share of fears. I still do too. But somehow as each fear arises, solutions also manifest that help me overcome. Sometimes, it’s easy. Sometimes I need to sleep on it. Sometimes I’ll have to talk it out with someone who’s faced it. No matter the method, a solution is always available. The fact is that this too shall pass.

So I am going to voice out on only one of my greatest fears. Simply speaking the name itself is going to place a shiver on your necks. The fear of plagiarism.

We all have experienced it if you’re a creative person. Either the fear of being copied. Or the fear that we might unconsciously copy someone else. I had this fear for quite some time until I voiced it to someone I knew. He’s a casual poet who posts his stuff online but nothing beyond that. So I guess, he’s a poet in his own right. He gave me some golden words of wisdom. It was with those words embedded in me that I confidently posted my content online. Simply put, he said,

“There are going to be people who copy from you – no matter where you come out of your shell. But the reach you achieve will outweigh the plagiarisers. If you are plagiarised and you can do nothing about it, just sooth yourself thinking that the one who did copy thinks so highly of your work that they rip it off. Imitation is the greatest flattery. Tell me, who gets copied from during an exam? It would be the brightest kid in the batch.”

People of yore believed the moon to be bright
But it wasn’t until later that we found it was borrowed light.
The moon isn’t trashed for an accidental copy
As long as it uses the light in a manner differently

The river does reflect the aura of the moon
To think that the river is luminous is being a loon.
The river has a beauty of its own right
Which it attempts to enhance using a heavenly sight.

Well, that wasn’t the exact advice, but I came close enough to what I could remember about that day. What do you think about this “fear”? Also, here’s another post on a very similar topic: Musings of a Muse.

  1. You know, I never gave that much thought. I suppose I’ve wondered about all the reblogging it, but I found it more flattering than anything. If I want to “borrow” someone else’s words, however, I always ask first and make sure I give them credit for saying them. Every one says to put a copyright notice on my blog. But if someone wants to copy something and not tell me, what good is that. But having said that, yes, i think a lot of people have that fear.

I loved that little poem, btw. Did you write it?

    1. Yes, yes I did write that poem.

Did you seriously think that I could write a post on plagiarism, and include stuff that wasn’t mine, and still get away with it?

Thank you for reading the post and for the compliment, 😀 Means a lot 🙂

And yeah, but atleast, with reblogging, people do know who’s content it is.

  2. the critical thing is to always give attribution:
“this is a poem written by xxxx and published in xxxx”
“in his book xxx joe guy said– (and quote him IN quotes,) or paraphrase, without quotes. )

never use someone else’s exact words unless it is attributed by name of author and title of work
this can be indented quote, or in quotation marks

mention that “joe xxx said in his book on xxx (or title)

plagiarism is in a nutshell “using someone else’s words as your own”

ideas can also be plagiarized….if specific, but just in passing not plagiarism

[this is by no means all there is to avoiding plagiarism, but normally it isn’t done by mistake]

if you copied this entire post of mine…pasted it in a blog or elsewhere and it appeared to look as if it were your own words, this would be plagiarism.

hope this is of some help to you… 🙂

    1. Thanks Gradmama2011. It was of help. The problem that I do have is the fact that originality and creativity go without recognition in the hands of the creator – but someone else uses it without permission and is able to use it to their benefit… Well, that’s a serious issue.

      1. This is true, it is a serious issue. However, to me the worst thing that could happen to me in writing would be if I lost a reputation for being honest and ethical. There isn’t much we can do to keep someone else from stealing for us…but if they do, and they are exposed–that is serious for them.

  3. I’m pretty sure no one will ever copy any of my writing. I fear more my use of images found on the Internet. I usually try to only borrow some small part while creating a new image. But is that good enough? Am I still in danger of getting sued? I hope not.

  4. Interesting, I don’t think this is a problem for me, not yet anyway. Hopefully, one day it will be a problem. You write in a manner that is clear and easy to read. The poem was lovely 🙂

    1. Umm… Either there’s a typo there, or I misunderstood something.

“Hopefully, one day it will be a problem.”

Thanks for giving me the CLEAR AND READABLE BADGE 😉
I write as I think. Kind of spontaneously – maybe that’s why. Thanks a lot for that observation
Made my day – actually – made my night, where I come from.
