What’s The Time?

For the best time of forty years, they had stuck together.
They shared laughs, tears, thoughts, and fears.

But not too soon, one had to part ways
and yet his chair always held his place.

For another decade, they stood side by side
Shared their fears and shoulders while they cried.

Alas, time is a ruthless overlord but in a friend’s guise:
for soon enough the next one had experienced demise.

For a period of five years they both met, but rarely would they speak to.
It became difficult to remember one name – and too much to ask two.

Heart, nerve, and sinew cannot be forced to serve past their turn
and one of them had his lifeline end up in the ashes of an urn.

The last of them stood gazing with a smile on his face
for the four chairs never failed to amaze.

Why they stood there, alone together, he never could understand –
yet he felt for the rest of life, he just looked without reprimand.

So he lived his remaining life by the lawn with the chairs
and no joy could outlive his – not even a billionaire’s.

As he was let down for the one last time – they say he had a smile
for who else could boast of a friendship that only time could defile?

    1. Thank you 🙂 I’ve received this comment from a couple of people and realised it’s quite open for interpretation.

I had initially meant it for four different friends, but given the feedback, well, to each his/her own 🙂 Poetry is poetry because it’s open to all

      1. Thank you for giving a choosy reader like me something this good to read! Keep writing more, I beg. Cause I might soon be done reading your works and still wouldn’t have had enough of them!
